About Minutemen · Since 1974

Fifty years of Fairfield County soil

Minutemen Land Services has worked properties in and around Norwalk since 1974. Long enough to know which slopes wash out in a March storm, which lawns scorch in August, and which shrubs survive a winter three streets from the water.

Our story

Started with a mower and a round

We began in 1974 with a handful of Norwalk properties on a fixed weekly round. Nothing about that beginning was ambitious. What it did give us was fifty years of returning to the same gardens, and there is no substitute for watching what you planted grow up.

The design and installation side grew out of that. Clients who trusted us with the lawn started asking about the beds, then the walls and the walkways. We learned the build by being the people who had to maintain it afterwards, which is a useful way round to learn it.

We are still small enough that the person who walks your property is the person who stands over the work. Most of our clients came from a neighbour pointing over the fence, which is the only kind of advertising that has ever really worked for us.

The long version

Half a century, four chapters

  1. 1974

    The first season

Minutemen starts as a handful of Norwalk properties cut on a fixed weekly round, the same principle the maintenance side still runs on.

  2. 1980s

    Beyond the mower

Clients who trusted us with the lawn started asking about the beds, then the walls and walkways. Design and installation grew out of maintenance rather than the other way round.

  3. 1990s

    Commercial contracts

Office parks and condominium associations across lower Fairfield County come on to scheduled contracts. Roughly half the work has been commercial ever since.

  4. Today

    Still on Highland Avenue

The yard has not moved, the crews are settled, and a good share of the calendar is properties we have looked after for decades.

How we work

Four things we will not trade away

The owner walks the property

Every estimate comes from someone who will be on site while the work is done. There is no salesperson between you and the crew, and no quote written from a satellite photo.

We plant for year five

Anyone can make a bed look full on the day it goes in. Spacing that looks generous in April is spacing that still looks right when the shrubs are grown.

A schedule you can rely on

The same day each week, the same faces, and a call from us when weather moves something. Reliability is unglamorous and it is most of why clients stay.

Straight answers, in writing

Scope, materials and price in writing before we start, including the parts you might not want to hear, like a hedge that needs three seasons rather than one cut.

The crew

The same faces, week after week

Crews are settled rather than assembled each morning from whoever is available. The people on your property know where the sprinkler head is, which gate sticks, and where the dog gets out. None of that is in a work order, and all of it is the difference between a property that is cut and a property that is kept.

It also means somebody notices. The hedge thinning on the north side, the bed by the drive drying out first, the turf under the maple that wants overseeding this autumn rather than next. Those get flagged before they become jobs.

Since 1974, more than fifty years working properties in and around Norwalk. That is the main reason clients stay with us: we have watched these gardens behave over decades rather than seasons.

Yes, and small enough that the person who walks your property is the person who stands over the work. Most of our clients came from a neighbour pointing over the fence.

Fully insured, and we will provide the certificate without being chased for it. On a property with people and pets around, that is not a detail to take on trust.

Our yard is at 377 Highland Avenue in Norwalk, which puts most of lower Fairfield County inside a half-hour drive.

Both, and roughly half and half. Private homes and estates on one side, offices, condominium associations, retail and municipal grounds on the other.

Nothing. Estimates and consultations are free, including the on-site visit, and you are under no obligation afterwards.
